Chelsea blows past British transfer record, splashes £117m on Rogers

Six years for Rogers at Chelsea. Plus a one-year option. Sky Sports says so. Medical? Done Monday, right after England's World Cup run in America wrapped up. Imagine that trip.

Villa's in the Champions League, yet Rogers jumped ship. For Chelsea. A team with *no* European football next season. Go figure. Arsenal wanted him bad. Had him as 'primary target.' But they wouldn't cough up what Chelsea did. So, West London it is.

The £117m fee? It makes Manchester City's recent £116m splash on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest look like pocket change. And it absolutely shatters Chelsea's own previous record – the £115m they paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo back in 2023. This isn't just a record; it's a statement about inflation.

Rogers wasn't exactly slumming it at Villa. He had a damn good season: 14 goals, 11 assists across 55 appearances. Even snagged Europa League Player of the Year as Villa lifted continental silverware. The guy’s an England international, 21 caps already. Played five times in their World Cup romp. Joined Villa from Middlesbrough for £16m in 2024. Now, he's Stamford Bridge bound. For a cool £117m.

Sky Sports big shot Kaveh Solhekol called this transfer a "statement of intent." For new manager Xabi Alonso, apparently. Solhekol thinks Alonso got assurances about spending before taking the gig. Good call, Xabi. Chelsea's 2024–25 season was a mess by their standards. So, yeah, this monstrous acquisition? Definitely a "show of ambition." Or desperation. Pick your poison.
