Howe exits Newcastle with Jaissle lined up to take charge

Eddie Howe has stepped down as Newcastle United manager following discussions with the club's board. Matthias Jaissle, currently at Saudi-backed Al Ahli, is the frontrunner to succeed him.

Howe's departure comes after 48 hours of talks with Newcastle's hierarchy, though the manager had begun exploring a potential exit several weeks prior, according to Sky Sports. His final game was a 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday, leaving him 25 days before Newcastle's Premier League opener against Liverpool on 23 August.

The 38-year-old German manager Jaissle is said to be in advanced negotiations to replace Howe. Al Ahli, Jaissle's current club, is owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund—the same entity that controls Newcastle—which may facilitate the transition.

Kieran McKenna and Antonio Conte were also considered as potential replacements, per Sky Sports News.

Howe's decision reflects frustration over Newcastle's summer transfer activity. The club sold midfielder Sandro Tonali and winger Anthony Gordon, whilst losing striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool last year. Incoming recruits include winger Bazoumana Toure (£42m), midfielder Sean Steur (£23m) and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen (£18.5m), but the club missed out on Johan Manzambi to Aston Villa.

Uncertainty surrounding captain Bruno Guimaraes, who has expressed a desire to join Arsenal, has also clouded proceedings. Despite the departures and unresolved futures, Howe had previously believed he could steer Newcastle forward this season if recruitment proved adequate—a condition ultimately unmet.

Betting angle

Newcastle's odds to finish in the top four are worth assessing if Jaissle takes charge and Guimaraes departs—the combination would mark substantial squad disruption.
