Liverpool seal Barcola deal as Isak replacement plan takes shape

The Reds will pay a guaranteed £106m for Barcola, with performance-related add-ons that could push the total fee to £123m, according to Sky Sports. The 23-year-old becomes Liverpool's third major summer arrival alongside Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo, following a protracted negotiation that saw PSG's initial £145m asking price reduced substantially.

Barcola joins as Andoni Iraola's second-most expensive signing in the club's history, surpassed only by Alexander Isak's £125m arrival from Newcastle last year. The winger, who had long targeted a move to Anfield, signed a lengthy contract after earlier valuations created a significant gap between the two clubs.

Sky Sports' analysis suggests Liverpool see Barcola as their solution to replacing Mohamed Salah's output from wide areas. Yet scepticism exists about the strategic fit. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher questioned the recruitment logic, noting that Barcola is primarily a left-winger whilst the squad already contains four players comfortable on that flank. Carragher argued Liverpool's actual shortage lies on the right wing.

The arrival also raises questions about positional balance given Salah's reduced productivity last season coincided with the introduction of two centre-forwards—Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak—which shifted the Egyptian's role from finisher to provider. Manchester City's reported interest in Cody Gakpo suggests further squad movement may yet occur.
