Mbeumo double helps United past Atletico in Stockholm friendly

Arnau Ortiz gave Atletico an early lead with a cross-shot that crept past Tom Heaton inside five minutes, but Michael Carrick's side dominated the remainder of the half and turned the match around after the break.

Mbeumo opened his account from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute after Shea Lacey was tripped, then added a second 20 minutes later following Jack Fletcher's work in winning back possession on the right flank. Morten Hjulmand came close to levelling late on but struck the post with Heaton beaten.

Beyond the result, United's display offered Carrick plenty of encouragement. Mason Mount impressed in a deeper midfield role, according to Sky Sports, and is now fighting for a place across multiple positions. Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, recently signed from Chelsea, continued his promising pre-season showing composure alongside Mount.

Leny Yoro's display at right-back caught the eye, with the defender completely shutting down Atletico's Ademola Lookman. Academy prospects also shone, with Lacey's crosses assisting Mbeumo's goals and the teenager looking sharp both centrally and on the wing.
