Penalty controversy as Scotland punished by early Morocco strike at World Cup

History? Forget it. Scotland's World Cup ambitions took a beating Saturday. Morocco snatched all three points. The winner? It hit the net before most punters had even found their seats in the 0-1 loss.

Grant Hanley looked lost after just 70 seconds. Ismael Saibari pounced, burying it in the top corner at the Boston Stadium. One-nil. Saibari almost made it two just moments later. Scotland looked rattled. Badly.

Clarke's boys couldn't even manage a sniff until first-half stoppage time. Aaron Patterson dug out a ball for John McGinn. He shanked it high and wide. Seriously, not one shot in 46 minutes. Not a single one.

Second half offered little more. McGinn went down in the box, courtesy of Neil El Aynaoui. Referee said no. A 'fair challenge,' apparently. Ryan Christie then somehow blazed over from a Scott McTominay lay-off, wide open. That miss could haunt them for years.

Another penalty shout arrived in the 82nd. McTominay, again by El Aynaoui, hit the deck. Roy Keane, on ITV, wasn't having it: "I don't think it's a penalty. I think he's looking to go down." The ref agreed. Appeals waved off.

McTominay and Lyndon Dykes huffed and puffed late on. Zero. Scotland finished the game. Zero shots on target. Let that sink in.

Brazil on June 24. Win that, and maybe there's a prayer. Anything less? Book the flights. It's done.
