London City, backed by owner Michele Kang, have orchestrated the signing as part of an aggressive expansion strategy. According to Sky Sports, the deal sits in the ballpark of £30,000-a-week contracts—comparable to elite earners in the division. The Lionesses, in only their first WSL season, are assembling a roster including England goalkeeper Mary Earps, France midfielder Grace Geyoro, and Kosovo's Kosovare Asllani.

Putellas offers more than on-pitch excellence. Her global brand recognition carries significant commercial weight: shirt sales, merchandise revenue, and a foothold in the UK market. She enters at full sharpness, having orchestrated Barcelona's midfield dominance this season and is favourite for a third Ballon d'Or award come autumn.

Kang's ambition is explicit: fast-track Champions League qualification through elite recruitment. Multiple suitors—including NWSL clubs—tabled proposals, but London City's financial package proved decisive. The Catalonia native, known colloquially as "La Reina" (the queen), demonstrated her influence in Spain's 4-0 demolition of England in June, scoring twice.
