Tunisia sack Lamouchi after just one World Cup game β a first in tournament history
Tunisia have parted ways with head coach Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 hammering by Sweden in their opening World Cup 2026 group game β making him the first manager in World Cup history to be sacked after a single match.

The Tunisian Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that Lamouchi's contract had been terminated by "mutual agreement", according to BBC Sport. The 54-year-old Frenchman had initially appeared to survive the immediate fallout β sources told the BBC he took training on Monday β but the axe fell swiftly regardless.
Sweden put five past Tunisia without reply on Sunday, bar a consolation, in Group F action at the Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe, Mexico. It was a damaging result and Lamouchi did not spare his own players afterwards. "We made too many mistakes," he said. "We are shooting ourselves in the foot, we are hurting ourselves."
His record in charge was grim reading: one win from five matches, that sole victory a 1-0 friendly result against Haiti on his first day in the job in January. Warm-up form ahead of the tournament offered little comfort either β a 1-0 defeat to Austria was followed by a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Belgium.
Lamouchi had been appointed in January, replacing Sami Trabelsi after Tunisia's Africa Cup of Nations exit at the last-16 stage against Mali.
No manager had previously lost their job at a World Cup after just one game. The closest historical parallels cited by BBC Sport involve Henryk Kasperczak, dismissed by Tunisia during the 1998 World Cup after failing to win either of their first two games, and South Korea's Cha Bum-kun, sacked the same tournament after back-to-back defeats.
HervΓ© Renard, former manager of Morocco and Saudi Arabia, has been appointed to take charge for the remainder of the tournament. Tunisia still face Japan and the Netherlands in Group F.
Betting angle
Renard's appointment adds intrigue but Tunisia face two formidable opponents with almost no margin for error. At current form, backing them to exit in the group stage looks a reasonable angle, though odds will likely reflect that reality already.
